3. JACOB AND JOSEPH MEET (46:28-34)

28 Judah he sent ahead of him to Joseph to show2555 the way before him to Goshen.2556 When they2557 arrived at Goshen,

29 Joseph harnessed his chariot,2558 and off he went2559 to Goshen to meet Israel his father. When he saw him he flung himself on his neck and wept on his neck steadily.2560

30 Then Israel said to Joseph: “Now I can die,2561 now that I have seen your face and know you are alive.”

31 Joseph then said to his brothers and to his father’s household:2562 “I will go and inform Pharaoh and tell him, ‘My brothers and my father’s household, who were once in the land of Canaan, have come to me.

32 The men are shepherds, livestock-men are they. Their flocks and herds and everything they own they have brought.’

33 So when Pharaoh sends for you and inquires about your occupation,

34 You shall answer: ‘Livestock-men have your servants been from our youth until this very moment, both we and our ancestors.’ Thus you will be allowed to remain in the land of Goshen, because an abomination to Egyptians is every shepherd.”2563
